The Big Bend Report - 6-04-10

Redfish are on fire! Low incoming and high outgoing tides is the key. Cut bait, live bait, and artificials will all do the trick. Homosassa is on fire. Tarpon are on the flats and snook have invaded the waters. Big snook are eating big live mullet and Yo-Zuri crytal minnows like it is going out of style. Find the points of the islands and rocks. Look for the mullet schools for reds. The tarpon are spread out in singles and doubles on the Oklahoma flats near Homosassa and Chazz. Keep an eye out because they are spooky and easy to miss. Fly will be the key for the big boys. KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN for passing cobia in 6' - 8' on the flats! Also big grouper on the shallow flats around the rocks, Steve Sawyer speared two nice gags in 10' last weekend.

The Big Bend Report Off-Shore 6-04-10

This is my favorite time of year to be offshore. I've been mainly fishing from 25-75 feet and have made a few runs out deeper to the middle grounds. The grouper and snapper bite is phenomenal right now in all depths. You can fish many different ways for the grouper and snapper but I prefer artificial. We have been bringing most of our grouper and snapper in the boat on 5oz Hookher flutterjigs, and for the shallow water grouper I troll the Yo-Zuri Hydro magnums that dive 20-30 feet. The water is in the mid 80s right now and it keeps getting hotter by the day. The water is not the only thing that has heated up. The kingfish and the cobia have also been on fire. We've been running into large schools of kings and scattered schools of cobia on every offshore trip. The kings have been easily caught by casting the Yo-Zuri crystal minnows and sashimi lures. AJs are stacked up on all the wrecks and large rock piles. We've targeted them with the flutter jigs and even on top water chuggers. If you like making the long run to the middle grounds, you'll have a good chance of running into more than just big grouper and snapper. Right now in our area conditions are perfect for catching tuna, dolphin, and even wahoo. So have a pitch bait ready and be prepared for trolling if you want to target these pelagics. The bait is everywhere so keep in mind that live bait is always a great option if you want to anchor up and drop a bait to the bottom or put out a flat line. When it's hot in the middle of the day sometimes live bait may get the groupers attention when other things fail.
